Frequently asked questions.

1. What is a dental hygienist, and how are they different from a dentist?
Dental hygienists are licensed professionals who specialize in preventative oral health care. They focus on cleaning teeth, educating patients on oral hygiene practices, and conducting routine exams to detect issues like gum disease. Dentists, on the other hand, diagnose and treat more complex dental problems and perform procedures like fillings, crowns, and root canals.

2. How often should I see a dental hygienist?
It is generally recommended to visit a dental hygienist every 6 months for routine cleanings and assessments. However, depending on your individual oral health needs, more frequent visits may be advised.

3. Will my appointment be covered by dental insurance?
Most dental insurance plans cover preventative care, including cleanings and exams with a registered dental hygienist. At our clinic, we offer direct billing to most insurance companies in BC, making the process convenient for you. It’s always a good idea to check with your insurance provider to understand the extent of your coverage for dental hygiene services.

4. Can dental hygienists treat gum disease?
Yes, dental hygienists can provide scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) treatments to help manage and treat early-stage gum disease (gingivitis and mild periodontitis). Severe cases may require a referral to a dentist or periodontist.

5. What should I expect during a teeth cleaning?
During a teeth cleaning, your hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth, polish the surfaces to remove stains, and provide fluoride treatment if needed. They will also check your gums for signs of disease and offer personalized advice for maintaining your oral health at home.

6. Does a dental cleaning hurt?
While many people find dental cleanings to be relatively painless, it can be uncomfortable or even painful for some, especially if you have sensitive teeth, gum inflammation, or a lot of plaque buildup. You may experience some discomfort during the scaling process, but our dental hygienists will work with you to minimize any pain by using gentle techniques and, if necessary, numbing gels or other pain-relief options. If you feel any discomfort, don't hesitate to let us know so we can adjust the treatment to make you more comfortable.
